The new generation is here. Bishop Baumgartner Obispos are proud to officially announce their debut as Guam’s first-ever Middle School Esports Team. Their debut also stands as a reach out to all the other local middle schools in hopes of meeting and competing with other Esports Teams. This new chapter of Obispos history is a big step for their hopeful, future Obispos who strive and look forward to creating a successful future through gaming. BBMCS (Bishop Baumgartner Memorial Catholic School) wants students to be able to participate in all kinds of extracurricular activities no matter what form it comes in. Whether it’d be the usual, physical sports, academic clubs, or other activities such as Esports. They believe that interacting with others in different ways gives students the opportunity to express themselves in one way or another.
Their Obispos (Latin for Bishop) Team consists of a 10 player roster, which they hope to expand to an estimated 40 players after their main players (as of right now) kick off the first of tournaments for their younger Obispos. They believe a firm foundation leads to gradual success and they aim to constantly rebuild their strong team each season. The age range for all middle schoolers who participate in Esports ranges from ages 10 to 14, but it mostly consists of 8th graders. The main Obispos team as of right now comprises all 8th graders, who will, unfortunately, serve this year as their first, and last chance to participate in Middle School Tournaments. Despite these hard times, nothing would stop Obispos from always being on top of their game through practices, scrimmages, and even tournaments. One of these that was mentioned by the Obispos Teams’ main coordinator, Austin Cajigal, was a mini-tournament held at the University of Guam (UOG).
With OneQode and IT&E being two of their main sponsors, Obispos have carefully planned their next step to becoming Guam’s top Esports teams by playing and competing through various video games. Their heavily focused games include many popular titles such as League of Legends (LOL), TeamFight Tactics, and Valorant. These main games are those that are of availability to the “local recreational league” (Latte Esports/Triton Esports). The team also explains that they hope to participate in other games which include, Super Smash Brothers, Apex Legends, and many others. With concerns of upcoming tournaments, it has been said there is one scheduled in mid-February as a “kick-off” for the official season. After, there is news of weekly tournaments which will start in March to celebrate “UOG’s 70th Anniversary”.
“I’d like to congratulate Mr. Cajigal and the students and faculty over at Bishop Baumgartner Middle School for their assertiveness and initiative to create an esports team. Their actions are a testament to their overwhelming desire to fulfill a need for competition and inclusion in this space.
Esports at its core is about competition. I think most will agree that sports are important to youth development as they are the first experiences and mediums which introduce youth to concepts and lessons like teamwork, humility, accountability, sportsmanship, and grace to name a few.
The beauty of esports is that it allows these intangible lessons to be taught to a greater portion of the student body than just the traditional physical athlete. I hope the Obispos serve as an example to other middle schools to join suit. If local middle schools could show more of this initiative, organizations like Triton Esports and Latte Esports will gladly be ready to facilitate support in the shape of events and mentorship.
Remember that students looking for higher education at the collegiate level can make it on the UOG Triton Esports team, where they will receive a scholarship each semester for them to play esports and learn other concepts of that industry. Thus, assisting them with their financial aid and collegiate growth”
